Woke up from my nap and didn’t know what dinner was. I looked through the cabinet and found my emergency dal makhani and remembered I had some leftover rice from the fried rice.
This barely counts as cooking. But it is healthy and tasty. Also accidentally vegan.
Cost per person $2.00. I need to restock my emergency dal makhani.
The good kind of ultra-processed food.
I wouldn’t quite call it ultra-processed. The ingredients are immediately recognizable.
It really is. The Indian boil in a bag stuff pretty high up there on the quality scale for ultra processed.
This stuff is actually really good, I frequently buy this brand. Serve it with basmati, to which I add some cumin before cooking.
And then I pimp the result by adding “Glorious garlic pickle” by The Bay Tree, and Mr Naga hot pepper pickle.
I don’t recognize that brand, but Tasty Bite also has some good ones for when you just can’t cook. Or want a simple side.
I love these things. My favorite is the Palak Paneer (spinach and cheese) version. Goes great with that leftover rice too.
Yum! I have the kind you microwave for 60 seconds in the pouch, but it is more expensive. Where do you buy yours?
The Super Giant Mega International Market That Is 80% Asian Stuff. The closest to me is Super G but when I lived in Virginia was a Grand Mart. Mine also has a smaller dedicated Indian market in the same shopping center that occasionally has good stuff too.
Love discovering something new. Thanks for the post. Ill have to give it a shot.
dal makhani
Oh, Hecuba! (KITH ref), makhani-style sounds… pretty lovely?!
I don’t know what this is but it looks good. Can you describe the flavor? I’d like to try it if it’s anything like Vindaloo or Marsala.
Dal makhani is black lentils and kidney beans in what is basically a chili type gravy sauce with coconut milk. This particular brand has some noticeable hint of bitter melon flavor. It’s got layers.
TBH I was mainly joking, above.
Still-- the flavor’s complex-as-hell, but I can tell you that it starts with sauteing “panch paran.”
