  • Some people have specific long-term goals in mind for relationships; some just enjoy living in the present; most are somewhere between. Nobody else can say which is right for you.

Another commenter wrote that you’re probably about 18 years old. You may not know which of the above best describes you, and that’s perfectly normal at that age. I hesitate to tell anyone else what to do in their personal life, but if a compelling opportunity comes along that conflicts with your relationship, whether it’s another prospective relationship or moving away for school or work, remember that your boyfriend won’t prioritize your relationship when his parents find an Arab girl for him to marry.

  • I think 1 is unlikely because it’s NYPD and ICE. 2 is true broadly because there isn’t a law forbidding it in general, but there is a law against lying about being a public servant.

I don’t think there will be charges here, but I think a very ambitious prosecutor could bring charges. They might even find a jury mad enough to make them stick.

  • You are not going to find a satisfying answer to this question. It’s one I’ve been asking for a long time.

I could say “sadism”, but that’s almost tautological. The obvious follow-up is “but why are they sadists?”, and I don’t know that. It’s likely people who aren’t sadists can’t really know that, and people who are would probably fail at explaining it, were they inclined to try.

The best explanation I can manage is that someone who’s feeling bored and powerless might feel a little less bored and powerless for a moment if they can make someone else sad or angry. A person who actually gets off on that sort of thing is likely not all that intelligent or creative, so they fail at finding better entertainment.

If you’re still left wondering “but why?”, good. You’re probably not a sadist.

  • Instances subject to the legal systems of jurisdictions with age verification laws probably need the feature to exist to continue operating legally.

I don’t think the current structure of any of those laws would require instances to demand verification from other instances, and any instance operator who did such a thing would be socially unacceptable to the current population of the fediverse.

  • I haven’t found anything I want to install on my iPhone that I can’t. At one point it was emulators

So you have found something you wanted to install on your iPhone that you couldn’t, but Apple has decided to allow it for now. I think it’s pretty obvious how this is a problem.

Of course you’re not going to find apps that exist that you can’t install because Apple says so. People won’t bother making them if they can only be distributed to the tiny handful of users with jailbroken devices. Of course it comes up on occasion when Apple withdraws permission, with ICEBlock being the recent socially important case.

  • Way I see it, my iPhone is a pocket version of my Mac.

The thing is, you can install software from whatever source you like on your Mac. That’s not true of your iPhone - even in the EU and Japan where they’ve been forced to open up a little, apps can only be installed with Apple’s permission.

Macs were completely open in that regard until recently. You could install apps from wherever you want. Now, Mac apps have to be notarized by Apple or installing them requires use of the command line. That’s obnoxious, but the user still has the final say, unlike the iPhone.

    • Google has announced that a workflow for advanced users to install whatever they want will remain, but hasn’t published details. Many people don’t entirely trust them about this.
    • Third-party Android builds like LineageOS won’t be affected. These need a device with an unlockable bootloader. They can run any Android app that doesn’t intentionally sabotage them (some banking apps do this).
    • Linux distributions for phones exist, and can run Android apps via Waydroid. This provides the most freedom for the user, but the highest effort. This is mainly suited for Linux hobbyists right now.
