Technology@lemmy.world•UK fines Reddit $19 million for using children’s data unlawfullyEnglish
4·15 days agoThe headline is a bit misleading is it not? There is no evidence of children’s data being used unlawfully. (I mean there might I don’t know what counts as “unlawful”) This is just a fine for Reddit not to follow UKs dystopian ideas in time.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•LibreOffice Online, a self-hostable libre office environment, is coming back!English
1·15 days agoLove Cryptpad, but am I the only one for whom the loading indicator gives a bad flashback to early js framework web development where every website was 16 times the initial load time, 4 times the overall size and just more buggy. Website SPA or not have rarely a good reason to have a loading indicator for the initial load the browser already does that.

Games@lemmy.world•"Game preservation only works if people care" As GOG doubles down on its commitment to saving old games, it's asking players "who give a s**t" to support its crusadeEnglish
2·16 days agooof, found it. It is so weird seemingly every job listing for a software developer has the requirement of using AI nowadays. ITS NOT A SKILL, ITS MANDATORY TRAINING WHEELS. They will find worse programmers doing so, good ones can use AI if it makes sense you don’t have to force it.

71·17 days agoWas there another incident besides the 2026 sales promo image? I was a bit disappointing of their “response” if you can could call it that. But I don’t really see this as “pushing AI”, as far as I can tell this might just be an intern who was given the task to make a promo image and did not care at all.

Technology@lemmy.world•Judge scolds Mark Zuckerberg's team for wearing Meta glasses to social media trialEnglish
1·20 days agoOh yea you are right. XP was a joy to use. They have been slacking since they got that monopoly though. I am forced to use Outlook because of the company. And am always amazed how many redirects you can do for a simple authentication. Every service looks completely different and the audio in teams is so broken it cuts off for a couple of seconds and switches from mono to stereo for no apparent reason. Everything just feels like its extra work.
Switching to Linux on my private devices actually reminded me of the old windows. I just wish the UI UX of some software would be on par as well. LibreOffice and GIMP is just not fun to use.

92·21 days agoIt always amazes me how Microsoft is though. Stuff like Threads, Instagram, Facebook is incredibly evil but they still work?! I can at least understand why the majority of people who don’t care are there. Microsofts products don’t even work to begin with though. Everything they touch be it Xbox, Teams or Windows is just so bad i wonder how we even ended up here.
I really do not like brightness of the screen. Last year I found out how cool paperbacks are (the smaller ones) as I can put them in my pockets. Been reading more in 2025 than i did in the last decade i feel like.
I like the feeling of actually holding knowledge in your bare hands (given you can read and understand the language). Its so cool!
This is what reading on there feels like with 90% (on mobile, unironically) screen space used up for ads.

Dropping this here as well, really cool tool.
Do not play Minecraft, but I am so glad they broke free last year or so as well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How can we protect kids from the harms of social media without sacrificing everyone's privacy?English
1·23 days agoYeah, no that does not sound right. Maybe just “make personalized algorithms opt in”? But as this would be heavily lobbied by meta and bytedance probably, maybe just a switch to have the option if anything :(

8·23 days agoMake chronological feeds mandatory. Accounts you follow shall not be filtered nor censored and posts of accounts you have not followed should not be shown. Algorithmic feeds are allowed but should be opt-in inside the settings.
And also schools teaching and parents parenting.

9·24 days agoGonna use this thread to shout out https://github.com/YTLitePlus/YTLitePlus There are more than enough options for android users out there, this one is for iOS though. Tried it out this weekend on my jailbroken iPhone 6. If i read it correctly it should also be installable without a jailbreak but not that easily. Its super cool and nowadays it feels so weird that you got the option to do such shocking things like disabling shorts or reorder the tabs, its really fun.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is the herd mentality so common on Lemmy?English
61·24 days agoDon’t understand the downvotes you get. I don’t think it’s Lemmy exclusive though. It’s just what the reddit like voting system promotes. Just hiding the score would make it a lot better i think.
fixed the neighbors business card.

I also do not like this kind of sentiment. Sure in a perfect world it would be slightly better if we all are distributed equally on different servers. But the biggest advantage of the Fediverse still stands, even if we all are on a central instance. If mastodon.social ever looses its shit for whatever reason, its still possible to move without loosing connections.
I think ridiculing new folks about “rules” like this make the Fediverse less inviting and is counter productive. And to be honest the experience on .social is far better than on smaller instances IF you are coming from twitter and are looking for something similar. When I see new people on .social im happy that they even joined Fedi.
