Oh, not denying its legitimacy. Just not used to such a high quality picture of such an old machine.

It’s weird this picture looks like it shouldn’t be this high resolution.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Sometimes I wonder if the "Quantum Immortality" thought experiment is actually real... considering how many times I could've died.
2·4 days agoThere’s a really fascinating short film that I can’t find anywhere to watch anymore called Spin from 2004 (not the one about a DJ in 2005) that explores the idea that every moment for every conscious creature is a moment to behave in different ways constantly creating an infinite number of new universes.
I like the detail that the guy who became Superman is wearing red and blue.

382·5 days agoMy roommate always corrects me when I make this same point, so I’ll pass it along. Blu-Rays are compressed using H.264/H.265, just less than streaming services.
Genuinely made me cry a couple times Elija Wood is a treasure and the guy who made the show (the actor playing Wilfred) only ever made that show. Absolute brilliant mark on the world.
This has been going on a lot longer than AI, where the programmer (in this case the AI) isn’t aware that a function that does what you need already exists, it goes making it from scratch. It ends up slower and less stable than the proven function, but they get it to run, so to them it’s a success.
When I started to get a grasp on programming, I realized early on that I’m rarely solving novel problems and I should seek out to see how it was solved by others before I even begin to write my own approach. I usually find someone has done all the work for me and theirs works better than mine ever would.

I miss r/retiredgif. This is absolutely the most retired meme I’ve ever seen. Well done.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•In your opinion, what is the best brand of cell phones in terms of quality and price today?
2·6 days agoliterally a dumb phone is enough
Not to:
- Browse the web
- Check my bank balance
- Tap to Pay
- Use most any chat service (including open-source ones)
- Take a reasonable picture
- Listen to music (Brining another non-streaming player isn’t a reasonable trade off for most anyone)
- Remotely manage my home network (admittedly less “normal phone things”)
- The list goes on…
While I would love to be a Luddite and say I don’t need a smartphone, there’s just a swath of convenience that you can’t get any other way.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•In your opinion, what is the best brand of cell phones in terms of quality and price today?
235·8 days agoI’ll probably get flak for this due to being on Lemmy, but I’ll throw out the iPhone 16e. It’s priced really well against competition and you can often get them prepaid and unlocked at a decent discount.
And I’m sure someone will loudly tell me how wrong I am, but I’ve found the build quality to be best-in-show. I’ve dropped it with no case at least half a dozen times and you can’t even tell.
It’s not a power-user device so no, you don’t get all the fancy custom ROMs and such, but for doing all the normal phone things, I’ve not had a single issue.
I was a hardcore Android user for about 10 years, but now there’s so few real advantages over iOS that I just prefer the simplicity of iOS.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•TV remotes should have an easy-to-find (by touch) "volume toggle" button that toggles between two volume settings.
7·8 days agoThere is absolutely a standard volume max. Unfortunately loudness isn’t that simple.
You can have something that peaks in decibels that you can barely hear and sounds that are the same decibels as talking, but sounds ear-piercingly loud.
Your TV can only set and perceive level, or “decibels” of the input signal. Sometimes they can have smarter tools like compression, but these are rare and when they are there, usually poorly implemented.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some product categories where the mainstream option IS the best option?
11·11 days agoYou’re right. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. But for those few games that don’t run you get:
- A truly FREE OS
- No data tracking
- No advertisements
- No OneDrive
- No forced updates
- Complete control over your system, including visuals
- Tons of FOSS
Computers are more than video game machines. I made the final switch away from Windows because I wanted to be treated like a person, not a customer.
It’s a lot more about philosophy than functionality. When something doesn’t work in Linux, I know it’s a genuine mistake someone made and that it wasn’t intentional. M$ has infinite money and they can’t even figure out how to keep the Sleep function working while at the same time forcing you to sign up for an account that they can choose to cancel for any reason whenever they feel like.
You don’t own your PC on Windows.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you doing something to fuck over "the powerful"? If so, what?
35·11 days agoI’m here, for starters.
I’ve been systematically removing as many parts of myself from the corporate internet over the course of years. So far I’ve managed to drop:
- GMail
- Netflix
- Windows
- Prime
- HBO
I still have some stragglers, like YouTube, that I doubt will go anytime soon, but for the most part, I don’t have to deal with:
- Dark patterns
- Advertisements
- Anti-features (updates that remove functionality)
- FOMO
- Advertisements again
- Advertisements a third time
Really, I just do not like being advertised to, and outside YouTube sponsorships, which can be skipped, I can go whole days without ever coming across an ad on the internet, and even that feels high.
On top of all this, I’ve massively reduced my data collection footprint, meaning there’s far less info available to said advertisers and data collectors that they can use to manipulate me.
I also regularly try to provide some of this to my friends to also help cut them away from the propaganda machine.

I see no issues here…
