Knowing how to “read the room” is just as important as any other information an intelligent person may possess. Just because I’m talking about a problem with my car doesn’t necessarily mean I want an exhaustive lecture on fuel pumps. Similarly, knowing how and when to correct someone without hurting their feelings is absolutely vital. Intelligence is a lot less useful if everyone thinks you’re a pedant or an asshole.

If I recall correctly, this is kinda how the ambient sounds were recorded for this episode. The guy recorded his own stomach. He didn’t tell his co-worker where the sound came from until after the episode was finished, to avoid grossing him out during editing.

You’re right; “technique” was a poor choice of words. I should have written “I’d suggest finding a different way to express yourself”.

That’s a good example of my point right there, actually. My wording was off, and I came across as rude when I didn’t intend to.

I’m okay with it under very limited conditions. To boil it down, I have to be 100% sure that they’re joking. For one thing, people say that shit seriously and then claim “it was just a joke”.

Without things like tone of voice and facial expression for people to go on, you’re gonna be misunderstood sooner rather than later. And yes, you might even find yourself banned. I’d suggest finding a different technique.
