Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who have been on Lemmy since the very initial reddit API debacle, or before even that, how much do you think it has changed?
4·7 days agoSame for the most part. There was a period of time where it seemed like every post and comment was angry. Silly fights over semantics. That still happens but it seems like less. I see more and more English speaking European influence. Still lots of angry Linux guys but Linux seems to be in a winning season so it’s chill.

Games@lemmy.world•What are your hallmark games? What games have shaped how you view games?English
4·15 days agoHalf life 2. I could conceive of shooter games but until playing HL2 as a teenager, I didn’t quite understand how much storytelling they could pack in. Suddenly, it felt like games could be thoughtful and entertaining pieces of art instead of solely fun time

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the funniest impulse purchase you’ve made/seen someone you know make?
4·22 days agoGirlfriend broke up with me so I proceeded to buy a $900 motor scooter (fast mo-ped). My best friend also wrecked it and bent the front wheel after owning it for approximately 30 minutes. It did not bring all the girls to the yard but it was fun!

1·1 month agoMy in-laws has a touch of autism in their veins and very happy with their routine and 5 stores they go to. Anything beyond seems to be quite stressful and the opposite of fun
Science VS! Has a good podcast episode about happy people studies. TL:DR There is real benefit to maintaining at least a few real close friendships throughout life. Apparently commiseration and friendship actually goes a long way.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are movies/tv series that has the same vibes of Shrek movies?
1·2 months agoHoodwinked is a good one. I remember being 10 or so and watching that in the theater and being soooo overwhelmed by its wackiness and fast-pace. It quickly becomes obvious it’s sort of a weird self aware movie, much like Shrek!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there modern plug-in-play in the modern age?
2·2 months agoHis personal system is MacOS but I know he works on windows at work. I believe ZFS is an option. I guess, the easier the better. Something that isn’t a ginormous project. I suggested a home server with Truenas, just because that’s what I have. I don’t want to send him down that route if there is an easy option he can just buy and go and be satisfied he met at least RAID 1 safety net.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there modern plug-in-play in the modern age?
2·2 months agoThanks. It’s intimidating writing a post and what’s unnecessary info. Here’s some more! He deals with high resolution video and photos so speed and higher bandwidth is definitely a priority. Upon speaking to him he seemed to have a natural interest in a raid 1 or more option. I think this is just from surface skimming reading. I know he has 2 disks now ready to go. I think his ideal world is a disk that shows up on various computers as a single disk. He works probably 50/50 MacOS and Windows.
He is not IT tech literate but is certainly capable of learning and taking extra steps or guides, if necessary.
