Funfact: there are several airlines specializing in horse transport. One of them is called “Air Horse One”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you call your significant other in your phone?
5·4 days agoMy husband is in my phone with a nickname of his old name. He took on a new name from our culture when he became a naturalized citizen, but I never changed it and he doesn’t mind. I was in his phone as “[my name] from café X”, until he got a new phone last year. The first thing he did was take me on a date to a new café and proudly enter my number into his new phone as “[my name] from café Y”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are tell-tale signs a series has jumped its shark?
4·5 days agoI find it worse when the sexual tension just keeps on going and goes nowhere. I really liked for example that they didn’t do that in Kim Possible. They let Kim and Ron become a couple and made new stories about how they work out as a couple. It’s been a while since I’ve watched it, but I remember appreciating that they could just be together instead of some will-they-won’t-they bullshit.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the most ridiculous conspiracy theory?
6·5 days agoVaccines cause autism and/or other major health issues for a significant portion of the population. Since vaccination rates in large parts of the world are close to 90% for important vaccines you’d be seeing large numbers of cases for whatever negative effect you think they had. E.g. if vaccines actually did cause autism, in a population where 90% are vaccinated you’d surely have more than the current ~1% of autism diagnosis.
Also the Covid vaccine killing people in large numbers. When the vaccine started rolling out a colleague told me with a straight face that the covid vaccine had already killed 1/3 of the population in Bulgaria (or maybe it was another eastern European country). She absolutely 100% believed it and said the media was covering it up.

2·5 days agoTea (black and green) is only bitter if you don’t know how to make it. Get good quality tea leaves (not the ones in the bags, they are usually the worst quality) and look up what temperature the water needs to be for your kind of tea. Usually around 70-80°C for green tea and 80-90°C for black. Especially green tea is only bitter if you prepare it with boiling water.

Technology@lemmy.world•What dating apps are really optimizing. Hint: it isn’t loveEnglish
34·6 days agoI liked dating platforms way back in the days when you could make your own page, had large text fields to describe yourself and could filter by age, location and maybe a few other important things like smoking or wanting kids. Years later I tried the apps and it was just frustrating and nothing else. There wasn’t even really space to describe yourself or show your character.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which high school friend took a path you didn't expect?
131·12 days agoA good friend in school always had really good grades. She worked hard, had mostly As and wanted to become a scientist since 5th grade, later she was mostly interested in biology and wanted to go into genetics. She graduated with really good grades, the second best student of our year, and would have probably made it into a field of her choosing. When I looked her up years later she had studied art and works at an art gallery. I’m happy for her if that’s what she wanted, but she had talked about studying biology nonstop from 5th grade to graduation.

2·20 days agoI was so confused by this comment until I remembered that US-american streets are planned and numbered. Because while I grew up in a village in the 90s, I wouldn’t be able to tell you where the “Primrosestreet” or the “Blackbird street” is unless I had friends who lived there.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Fellow 'Fediversers,' what keeps you hanging on here despite the "FV" being a work-in-progress, with all its built-in, various bumps & difficulties to experience along the way?
0·4 months agoThe vibe is a lot like “the old internet”. Sure, you don’t get a lot of responses most of the time, but those you do get are genuine and in good faith.
On reddit you can post the most innocuous thing and be met with ridicule or disdain. Most of the posts I made were commented on in a negative way. Even harmless things like “I found this funny product at the supermarket” in the appropriate subreddit was met with insults and a bunch of negative comments. Asking for advice on a popular advice subreddit got me a bunch of insults.
Here I have few answers, but those are genuine ones and so far they’ve been in good faith, no unprovoked insults, no sifting through someone’s history to insult them based on a post from 3 years ago.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have your parents ever said something so unhinged that you’re just left standing there like🧍♂️?
1·9 months agoNope. I’ve been no contact for years, but when I still had contact, she just kept moving the goalpost. When I had good grades in school: They don’t mean anything, only the grades for Abitur (A-Levels) count. When I had good grades in Abitur: It means nothing, noone will ever ask for your Abitur grades again. Only the university degree counts. When I had my bachelors: Bachelor is worthless, only the master is a REAL degree. When I had my master degree: The master degree is worthless… And that’s the point where I cut contact with her.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have your parents ever said something so unhinged that you’re just left standing there like🧍♂️?
1·9 months agoWell, according to her, university degrees are all worthless nowadays and “a masters is at a level a high school degree used to be at”. She also told me my As were worthless because “everybody gets an A nowadays just for showing up to class”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have your parents ever said something so unhinged that you’re just left standing there like🧍♂️?
1·9 months agoWhile writing my master thesis my professor suddenly left the university. Noone ever really knew why and there was no official statement other than a short sentence on the website that Prof. XYZ has left the department. My master thesis was on hold while I had to find a new professor. My mother, who has always accused me of being lazy and lying, insisted that it was all a lie. When I pointed out the news on the university website, she said: “I don’t know how you hacked the website and got it to display your lies, but I’m not falling for your deceit.” I am not a computer science major, I studied linguistics.

There was a very annoying radio ad for a musli brand when I was a child. I decided then that I would never buy their product ever. I’m 40 now and can proudly say that I still go out of my way to not buy any products from that company and to the best of my knowledge I’ve never eaten their products.
I get that the idea is to create recognition, but if it’s too annoying you won’t get a “Ah, I’ve heard that name I’ll go for this one” from me but a “Oh, that’s the annoying one, I’ll avoid it.”
