Eh, I feel like the female cow is still getting a raw deal. Less raw than the classic “breed this bull with this cow” arrangement, but still somewhat not good.

Trying to be “facts forward” so make of this what you will. Source: I was in FFA in highschool in a beef intense-ish area.
The method of collecting semen I’m most familiar with is when they take a female cow in heat and tie her up, then bring a male bull they want to collect semen from into the same pen. The male will smell the female is in heat, gets erect, and will attempt to mount her.
As the male is trying to mount the female, people in the pen with the cattle will have a large rubbery “sleeve” on a pole (imagine a cow sized condom on a stick) that they will maneuver around the bull’s penis as it mounts the cow. He does his thing in the condom thinking he’s inside the female (usually less than 30 seconds) dismounts and then the ranchers have their semen for artificial insemination.
I’ve been out of that area for over a decade now so a new method may have emerged since then, but in my Animal Sciences class, that’s how we were taught semen is harvested for most livestock.
Edit: I distinctly recall the “artificial vagina” being on a stick (and laughing about it in class), but best video I can find on the quick: https://youtu.be/-4ma3WeOxbo
DahGangalang@infosec.pubtoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Every Puerto Rican is an American citizen. Enjoy the Super Bowl.
2·15 days agoFrom the first article you linked:
Under the Jones Act, any vessel can enter Puerto Rico. In fact, many foreign vessels enter Puerto Rico regularly, importing goods from countries around the world. However, transportation of goods between two U.S. ports must be carried out by a vessel that was built in the U.S. and operated primarily by Americans. This law doesn’t single out Puerto Rico – it applies to all U.S. ports, the only exception being the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate the Jones Act as much as any rational American would, but from what I hear, they get a grab bag of exemptions on taxes when moving goods to/from South America (I suppose via non-US ships and via aircraft).
I don’t have the time for proper research at the moment to try to find what my dudes have talked about when it comes to laxer import/export controls, but may revisit later today if I get some down time.

11·15 days agoI don’t spend a lot of time with Puerto Ricans, but the two I keep in semi-regular contact with have said that they don’t want Puerto Rico to become a state (they wave vaguely at the rules for imports/exports to South American countries; apparently the island has relaxed rules on that compared to states?).
What’s actually stopped them from.becoming a state in the past? Seems like ~2013 was the last time a movement for that had any real traction?
Yeah, what’s with boomers and the need to add an emoji at the end if each message?

politics @lemmy.world•Democrat wins election "comfortably" in big Donald Trump district
2·19 days agoMakes sense, but couple clarifying questions:
By “ending careers for working with Obama”, you mean the people mostly left over from Bill Clinton’s time as president were threatening people within the Democratic party to not work with Obama?
Obama, rightfully pissed off made a stupid decision and allowed the neoliberals to hang onto the DNC.
Wait so, he was so mad at them that he…let them keep power? That doesn’t make sense. Can you shed any light on why he’d do that?
Man, that Victory Fund sounds corrupt as hell. Thanks for explaining things I was too immature/politically ignorant to pay attention to back in the day.

9·19 days agoif you didn’t play ball they bankrupted your entire state and let Republicans take it to punish you and set an example to get there states.
I don’t think I follow the logic on this, most probably because I’m not sure which funds / fund pools you’re referring to.
Could you explain what you mean a bit more ELI5 level?

Memes of Production@quokk.au•how i united with tankies to overthrow capitalism
5·1 month agoDidn’t know what bad jacketing was, so looked it up (didn’t expect to find anything for fedjacketing, hence why I just asked). Its interesting that Fedjacketing shows up as a form of badjacketing on the wiki page.
To cite the Wikipedia page:
Bad-jacketing is a term for planting doubt on the authenticity of an individual’s bona fides or identity. An example would be creating suspicion through spreading false rumors, manufacturing evidence, etc., that falsely portray someone in a community organization as an informant, or member of law enforcement, or guilty of malfeasance such as skimming organization funds.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•[Video] Furry tries to dance the ICE away
152·1 month agoKinda looks like he might’ve been filming ICE doing whatever they were doing, but was using “I’m just dancing on the street filming myself” as a cover. From there looks like ICE wasn’t pleased about it and, uh, “did something about it”.
That’s largely speculation tho. Would love for someone else who actually knows what happened to chime in.

9·2 months agoWhat gets me is that no one even saw him rise out of the tomb, according to the bible (as I recall it). A few days after he died, the Mary’s were just walking down the road and Jesus happened to be there going the other direction.
Like, it seems like no one even checked the tomb after the fact.
This reads like an LLM trying to impersonate a human who is trying to impersonate an early generation LLM.
And I am here for it.

Ew.
So that is to say, as far as you know, the method I describe above more or less still applies for pigs, sheep, etc?
