Obligatory IANAL, but I think US law is similar. Murder is any premeditated killing of another person. Voluntary manslaughter seems to be spontaneously but intentionally killing another person, and involuntary manslaughter involves criminal negligence that results in someone dying on accident. It seems here they have decided that he was not criminally negligent… Despite the fact that he was drinking, the gun was loaded, he pointed it at her, etc

Edit: Well, after reading the NY Times article on it, it sounds like the prosecutors office didn’t really try to make a case to the grand jury. The girl’s mother is quoted as saying: She also said that the grand jury in Texas “seemed to have no option but to conclude” that “no prosecution could be brought, based on the evidence they were presented with.”

On the visit home over Christmas, the idea crossed my mind of retiring there, and I got fairly homesick. I miss the arid, rugged climate. I hate the cold. Being close to family would be nice, and Texas could use more hard-headed, angry liberals. But it’s too dangerous until my uterus is old and broken down and while I’m responsible for other people with functional or soon-to-be-functional uterii. Texas also has water shortage on the near-term horizon from shitty resource management, so it’s best to wait and see where that goes.

But my point is, everyone wants to go home to die, right?

While I agree that Reddit is awash in (multiple) state propaganda, and that posting violent rhetoric, or even sympathy for it, there is likely to put you on a list (or multiple), I don’t think Reddit users really trust it’s that safe. In the last year and a half, since Luigi, there has been huge amounts of bitterness over the censorship of content and strict banning policies. People have discussed, and followed through on, leaving in droves. Huge amounts of old content are no longer available because people scrubbed their post history on the way out.

If the current discourse doesn’t reflect that, I would suggest it’s because :

1. the real people still there remain to discuss uncontroversial niche topics
2. political discussion there is largely driven by bots and paid actors now

First, I agree with you. But, even if Congress opposes him accepting it, they can’t enforce it. Pretty sure Congress wrote into law that we were supposed to have the Epstein files a month ago.

I don’t think the user you responded to was defending ICE. They were bitterly pointing out how the court system is rigged and how there is no oversight to enforce the law on the executive branch.

My guess is they are still gun shy from the defund the police movement after George Floyd.

ICE has no jurisdiction over American citizens. All they can do is detain/arrest someone obstructing their legal role: detaining and deporting immigrants. Further, all law enforcement, federal and local are trained NOT to handle that situation with a civilian by shooting them in the face while they are behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. He acted stupidly and illegally, which one suspects he knew since he fled the scene.

Additionally, federal officials are constitutionally prohibited from forcing their way into your residence without a warrant signed by a judge.

So while ICE has a narrow legal mandate, they have far outstripped those bounds.
